Welcome to Montego Bay! You’ve landed at Sangster International Airport (MBJ), collected your bags, and you’re ready to start your Jamaica vacation.
Fortunately, getting from Montego Bay Airport to the Hip Strip (Jimmy Cliff Boulevard) is incredibly easy. The airport sits right at the eastern end of Montego Bay’s main tourism corridor, and the drive to most places on the Hip Strip takes only about 5–10 minutes.
You have several transportation options, including an authorized airport taxi, private transfer, Uber, or even a Jamaican route taxi if you’re feeling adventurous.
But before you think about transportation, there’s one important thing you should take care of before arriving in Jamaica.
Quick Answer: The Hip Strip is only a few minutes from Sangster International Airport. For most first-time visitors, the easiest option is the Authorized Airport Taxi desk just outside Customs. At the time of writing, expect to pay around US$15 for up to four passengers to the Hip Strip, but confirm the current fare at the desk before departing.
Complete Your Jamaica C5 Form Before You Arrive
Jamaica requires arriving passengers to complete an electronic C5 Immigration and Customs Declaration Form.

The official C5 form is free, so there’s no need to pay a third-party website to complete it for you.
Sangster International Airport has been heavily upgraded in recent years, including digital immigration kiosks that have made the arrival process much more straightforward. Having your C5 completed before reaching the kiosks helps make the process as smooth as possible.
A Tip About Declaring Items at Jamaican Customs
Pay attention to the customs questions on your C5 form.
If you’re carrying something that needs to be declared, answer the questions accurately. Passengers declaring items proceed through the red customs channel, where you may be asked additional questions and Customs officers may inspect your luggage.
This can take considerably longer than going through the green channel, so allow some additional time if you’re declaring something.
Passengers who qualify as having nothing to declare generally proceed through the green channel after immigration and baggage collection.
A little extra time at Customs is much better than creating a problem by failing to declare something that should have been declared.
Option 1: Authorized Airport Taxi — Easiest for Most Travelers
For most visitors going from MBJ Airport to the Hip Strip, this is the option I recommend.
After collecting your luggage and clearing Customs, you’ll find the Authorized Airport Taxi desk immediately outside the Customs exit. Sangster International Airport identifies JUTA and JCAL as its authorized airport taxi companies.
Transportation rates are based on your destination.
At the time of writing, expect the trip to the Hip Strip to cost around US$15 for up to four passengers, although you should always confirm the current fare at the Authorized Airport Taxi desk before leaving.
One of the biggest advantages is that you generally don’t need to arrange anything in advance. Clear Customs, arrange your taxi, and you’re on your way.
Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it’s certainly appreciated when you’re happy with the service.
Best for: First-time visitors, couples, families and anyone who wants the simplest transportation option.
Option 2: Prearranged Private Airport Transfer
Another popular option is arranging for a driver to meet you at MBJ.
The advantage is that your driver already knows who you are and exactly where you’re going. This can be especially convenient if you’re unfamiliar with Montego Bay or want to use the same driver for tours and transportation during your stay.
After leaving the terminal, you’ll enter the airport’s ground transportation pickup area, where drivers and representatives wait with signs.
If it’s your first time at MBJ, don’t be surprised if this area feels a little hectic. There can be many drivers, hotel representatives and tour operators waiting for arriving passengers.
The downside of a private pickup is that you’re coordinating with a particular driver. If your flight arrives early or your driver gets delayed in traffic, you may have to wait for each other.
For such a short trip to the Hip Strip, an authorized airport taxi can sometimes actually be faster.
Best for: Travelers who want a familiar driver, larger groups or visitors who plan to use the same driver throughout their vacation.
Option 3: Uber in Montego Bay
Yes, Uber operates in Jamaica, including Montego Bay.
It can be a convenient option, particularly once you’re already in town.
However, airport pickups can sometimes be less straightforward than simply using an authorized airport taxi. There have also been anecdotal reports of individual drivers asking passengers to pay a different fare than the one displayed in the app.
If that ever happens, don’t feel pressured to accept it. Cancel the ride through the app and request another driver or use an authorized airport taxi instead.
For such a short trip from MBJ to the Hip Strip, I personally think the official airport taxi is usually easier for a newly arrived visitor.
Best for: Travelers already comfortable using Uber and app-based transportation.
Option 4: Jamaican Route Taxi — The Adventurous $1.50 Option
Now we’re getting local.
If you’re traveling light, comfortable asking for directions and want to experience how many Jamaicans actually get around, you can take a route taxi.
Route taxis are shared taxis that operate along established routes rather than taking one passenger directly to a destination.
From MBJ, you’ll need to make your way toward the public transportation pickup area and ask for the route taxi heading toward Bottom Road — the traditional local name for the area now commonly known as the Hip Strip/Jimmy Cliff Boulevard.
The fare can be around US$1.50 in Jamaican-dollar equivalent, making this by far the cheapest option. Because route-taxi fares can change, confirm the current fare before getting in.
But there’s a reason I only recommend this option to adventurous travelers.
These are shared local taxis, and the driver will generally fill the available seats. You may be sitting close to other passengers, and this isn’t ideal if you’ve just arrived with two large suitcases, a carry-on and beach gear.
If you’re traveling with just a backpack and want to jump straight into local Jamaican life, however, it’s an experience.
Best for: Solo travelers, backpackers and adventurous visitors traveling light.
How Long Does It Take From Montego Bay Airport to the Hip Strip?
This is one of the best things about staying on Montego Bay’s Hip Strip: the airport is incredibly close.
Sangster International Airport sits right at the eastern end of Montego Bay’s main tourism corridor.
Under normal traffic conditions, expect the trip from MBJ Airport to the Hip Strip to take approximately 5–10 minutes, although the exact travel time depends on where you’re staying along Jimmy Cliff Boulevard and current traffic.
That means you can potentially land in Montego Bay and be at your hotel, changed and heading toward the beach surprisingly quickly.
When Is Montego Bay Airport Busiest?
Sangster International Airport can get busy when several international flights arrive around the same time.
In our experience, late morning through the afternoon can be especially busy, particularly on weekends, holidays and during Jamaica’s peak tourism periods.
On a quiet day, immigration and Customs can move remarkably quickly.
On a busy Saturday with several large aircraft arriving close together, it’s a different story.
That’s when Club MoBay can become worthwhile.
Is Club MoBay VIP Arrival Service Worth It?
If your flight is arriving during a busy period, you may want to consider booking Club MoBay’s VIP Meet & Greet arrival service.
A representative meets you during the arrival process and assists you through the airport, including access to designated priority processing for immigration and Customs where applicable, assistance with your luggage and an escort toward your onward transportation.
At the time of writing, Club MoBay’s arrival service costs approximately US$50 per adult and US$25 for children ages 2–12, with children under 2 complimentary. Advance reservations are strongly recommended, and arrival services should generally be booked at least 48 hours before travel.

For me, the value isn’t necessarily there every time for arrivals. If you’re arriving during a quiet period, MBJ’s improved arrival facilities can make getting through the airport relatively painless.
But if you’re landing around midday on a busy weekend or holiday, avoiding a long immigration line after a flight can make Club MoBay feel worth every dollar.
It’s especially worth considering if you’re:
- Traveling with young children
- Arriving on a busy weekend or holiday
- Traveling with elderly family members
- Arriving after a long international journey
- Someone who simply hates airport lines

It’s a great way to finish a Jamaica vacation. Instead of spending your final couple of hours sitting around the terminal, you can relax in the lounge before your flight.
So even if you decide that the VIP arrival service isn’t necessary, I highly recommend considering Club MoBay for your departure from Montego Bay.
What’s the Best Way to Get From MBJ Airport to the Hip Strip?
For most travelers, my recommendation is simple:
Use the Authorized Airport Taxi desk.
The Hip Strip is so close to Sangster International Airport that you don’t necessarily need to complicate your arrival by arranging transportation days in advance.
If you’d prefer to have someone waiting specifically for you, book a private driver.
If you’re comfortable with rideshare apps, Uber is another option.
And if you’ve got one backpack, a sense of adventure and want to save almost every dollar possible, ask where to catch the route taxi toward Bottom Road.
Whichever option you choose, you’re not going far.
Within a few minutes of leaving Sangster International Airport, you’ll be traveling along Montego Bay’s coastline toward Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, better known as the Hip Strip, where you’ll find beaches, restaurants, bars, shops and hotels — and your Montego Bay vacation can officially begin.
